This is a blog to show examples of my architectural works.
Graduating in 2001, I studied at the University of Strathclyde and ETH Zurich. During my Advanced Architectural Design Diploma; I worked on the thesis of saving our small retailers, using the example of the Saltmarket in the Lower Merchant City as a fine example of an area in need of protection and preservation. This resulted in a commision for a small cafe / bar called massif', now 'transition'.
Upon moving to London, and commencing working at Squire and Partners, I was initially employed working in the planning and concept team, working directly under Michael Squire and Tim Gledstone. This was valuable experiance and allowed me to have a vast amout of first hand experiance and advice passed to me from Michael who formed Squires in 1976.
In 2003 I worked on Nothdown Street, a building that was seen as a catalyst for Squire and Partners, a direct investment of the partners into the local area of Kings Cross. This was envisaged as a mixed use building with a sustainable approach to urban design.
Following Northdown Street I moved on to work on Winchester Road, a mixed use residential (private and socially rented) and retail project, situated in Swiss COttage, NW3. During this period I increased my academic involvement by taking a unit part time at the University of Nottingham and being invited as a guest critique at the University of Strathclyde & the Bartlett, UCL.
I then moved on to work on Gordon House office refurbishment and roof extension, and Howick Place Fashion and design centre, tenancies. These are described, visually and in brief summary, individually in this blog.

I spent January-August 2008 at the excellent institution of ETH Zurich, studying under professor Renzo Vallebuona. Our brief was to design for the Sion olympics 2006 , in partnershp with Jill Shand we developed a strategy encompassing permanent, and temporary architectural intevensions for the Olymics.

Unit 4, the smallest residential shell, was commissioned by building developer Allesandro Crevelli (Fabbriche Ceramiche) as a show apartment, the client saw this as his part of the building he would retain.
This unit was a challenging shape with 5 elevations, 3 of which had very large window openings. The design exploits existing Victorian proportions, and cast iron beams, creating a distinctive character to the development.
Double height and mezzanine spaces make the use of high ceilings and oversized Victorian windows, create dynamic living spaces, and pushing the cellular accommodation into the depth of the footprint.

When the Post Office vacated their vast sorting office in the back streets of Victoria, the site caught the eye of creative Italian developer Fabbriche Ceramiche. The client saw the potential for a creative hub on an unprecedented scale in the area, aimed towards design and arts based tenants who could benefit from shared space and the cross fertilisation of ideas, concepts and products. It is the amalgamation of like-minded firms, designers and other associated organisations that are at the heart of the proposal.
The imposing red brick building retained some handsome original Victorian features, and the practice developed a scheme, which would sensitively maintain and exploit the existing character, both internally and externally, whilst creating new modern interventions to complement the original. Existing steel beams and columns were retained and refurbished, and the original ceiling exposed. Externally, the front facade was cleaned and repaired with new large-pane windows to maximise natural light inside the building. Tenancies are divided into small, medium & Large-sized units with shared WCs & Lifts.
Tenants include New York art auctioneers Phillips de Pury & Company, Faggionato Fine Arts, Tom Ford, and Marc Newson. On the upper floors of the building, residential accommodation is provided in loft style apartments, which again exploit existing Victorian details to create a distinctive character to the development. Double height and mezzanine spaces make the use of high ceilings and oversized Victorian windows, and create interesting living spaces. A palette of materials is used which draws on historical references including glazed ceramic bricks, stone and wrought iron.
